RAINBOWS of decorations

  • Of course, the first color that comes to mind with an Irish wedding isgreen! Although a lovely color, think of greens in different shades than thetypical dark green. Consider the beauty of sage and greenish white, emerald or if you are having a summer wedding, the color lime will lighten up your entire reception. Mix up the green with champagnes or golds. But, just because you are having an Irish wedding it doesn't mean you have to use greens. The traditional color of Irish brides in the past is actuallyblue, which symbolizes purity.

  • If you decide to go with green, for centerpieces, take greenery and wrap around green candles in varying heights. You could also wrapcandy to look like gold coins scatter them around the candles and placesome also in a small container to hold the “pot of gold”.

  • Another beautiful centerpiece idea is to use a crystal (preferably Waterford) or silver footed bowl with grass and ring it with your favoriteflower. If shamrocks are in bloom, consider filling up baskets with themfor a unique centerpiece idea (you could also use clovers).

  • If you don’t want to have your reception in an Irish pub but like the idea, hang up Guinness and Whiskey signs to create the ambience of anIrish pub. Another beautiful touch is to add Irish flags and banners.

  • Get your guests into the spirit of Irish and supply them with St.Patrick top hats to wear throughout the evening.

  • Does your family have an Irish Coat of Arms or Crest? Hang it up at the reception! If your groom and groomsmen aren’t renting their outfits, you could also consider getting the crest embroidered on their jackets.

  • Decorate a clay flower pot or buy a small cauldron pot and scattergold-foiled coins around it and allow your guests to write down their wishes or predictions for you to place into the pot. Or create a BlarneyStone and have each guest kiss it for good-luck.

  • To add extra color to your reception, create a rainbow with posterboard and place it behind the head table.

  • Cut shamrock shapes from green posterboard and write out your guests name on each one for table seating arrangements. Even make smallershamrock shapes and give them to your guests to use as confetti!

  • Hire Irish Dancers! Dressed in their full regalia, they will make a beautiful addition to your reception. You could also give them tasks of handing out programs etc., before they entertain your guests with their dance. They are sure to be a hit!

FEASTS for all saints

There are tons of menu options for an Irresistibly Irish Wedding! You could consider an early wedding and serve lunch for your guests as the main meal in Irish is lunch. You could have a lot of fun with this and just serve green foods such as:leafy salads, green vegetables, peas, artichokes and green fruit! Of course, theIrish are not without their traditional cuisine. Here are a few Irish menusuggestions:

SUPERSTITIOUS tips & traditions

HorseShoe

  • Make sure you are carrying a horseshoe! Irish brides use to carry a realhorseshoe for good luck but if that sounds a bit too cumbersome you canfind porcelain or fabric horseshoes to carry. Or give the task to your flowergirl to carry the horseshoe. Just carry it turned up so the luck won’t run out. When finished with the wedding, hang the horseshoe above your front door to continue your good fortune.

Keep Your Feet On The Floor

  • Keep your feet on the floor when dancing with your husband! Irishtradition states that if a bride takes her feet off the floor, fairies will get her.

Old Shoes

  • Get out some old shoes! When leaving the church, for good luck, someone should throw an old shoe over the brides head.

Jewelry Options

  • Consider your jewelry options with an Irish wedding. The most classic isthe Claddagh ring. The Claddagh ring has two hands holding a crowned heart. If you select a Claddagh ring as your wedding ring, make sure thecrown is pointing outward. You can also find Claddagh pendants or earrings instead. The Tara Brooch is also another traditional Irish piece. You could also opt to not do the pearl thing and wear emeralds instead!

Sunny Days

  • Wish for the sun on your wedding day! Irish believe that if the sun shines on a bride, it will bring good luck to the couple. Also beneficial is to hear a cuckoo or see three magpies on the wedding morning.

BagPipers

  • Get those pipers out! When selecting bag pipers, you want Villeanpipers which are quite different from Scottish bag pipers. Have them playas your bridal party exits or during the reception.

Simple Wisdom

  • Have one of your relatives share the simple wisdom found in the Traditional Irish Blessing during your reception:

May the road rise to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home

And may the hand of a friend always be near

May green be the grass you walk on,

May blue be the skies above you,

May pure be the joys that surround you,

May true be the hearts that love you.

GIVING back good luck

Your guests are sure to extend as much good fortune to you during your wedding sodon’t forget to give your guests a little thank you for participating:

  • Design some chocolates like shamrocks or the Claddagh symbol andwrap them up in green tissue paper with ribbon.

  • Give each guest a rabbit foot key chain for good luck.

  • Give guests little bottles of Whiskey or Baileys Irish Cream with aspecial message of thanks from you.

  • Send your guests home clean by giving each of them a little bar of Irish Spring Soap!

  • Make your guests a CD containing Gaelic or Celtic music to always remember your special day.

ADDING shamrocks of dances

A definite must throughout your Irresistible Irish wedding is including Gaelicor Celtic music throughout your reception. Add an Irish jig in there also!

Also consider including anything from U2 or one of the most current popbands out of Ireland - The Cranberries.

There’s also nothing like a room full of people singing! Get your guests to sing some old Irish Folk Songs for you to kiss. Create song books for each table to make sure everyone gets involved!

KISS ME I'm Irish

Ah...the simple kiss! It is such a small gesture but means so much. Have you lost the essence of that kiss with all that wedding planning?

Have a kissing party with your fiancé!

Grab your partner, make some Black Velvet (Guinness & Champagne), add some fresh oysters and pucker up! See where all those kisses can take you. Get creative! Paint some shamrocks on some body parts to show exactly whereyou would like to be kissed.

LIMERICKS on life

Irish are famous for their limericks! Go to your local library and see if you canfind some you can incorporate into your wedding. You are sure to have your own Irresistible Irish wedding thoughts, but here are some ideas to spark your imagination:

  • Write your fiancé your own limerick for the wedding! Limericks are whimsical five-line poems. Lines one, two and five rhyme with each otherand lines three and four rhyme with each other. Lines one, two and five havethree rhythmic parts and three and four are shorter.

  • Get out your reading glasses and read some famous Irish novels! There are so many amazing Irish writers - look for books by: James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Patrick Kavanagh, Flan O’Brien or Frank O’Conner.

  • Rent some Hollywood movies to view the backdrop of Ireland such as Far& Away or Circle of Friends.
